Cooling the air is only part of what an air conditioning system does. It also has to condense moisture out of it, and removing that latent heat is a large share of the total work in humid conditions. This is why a system can seem perfectly adequate through the cooler months and then feel hopeless in February. It is also why performance drops so gradually that most people never notice until the system is well down. A system losing refrigerant slowly gets a little worse each season, and because the decline is spread over years, the driver adjusts to it rather than noticing it.
Cold at speed but not at the lights
This is one of the most useful things you can tell us, because it narrows the fault considerably. If the air is cold while moving and warms up when stationary, the refrigerant charge is probably fine and the problem is airflow across the condenser at the front of the car. That usually means a cooling fan that is not running, running slowly, or a condenser blocked with road debris. Regassing a system with that fault will not fix it.

We leak test before we regas. If the system is low, that refrigerant went somewhere, because it is not consumed in normal use. Filling it without finding the leak means buying the same gas again next summer, and running the system low also starves the compressor of the oil the refrigerant carries.

Common questions
Why does it feel worse in summer than it did in winter?
Because humidity is a large part of the load. The system has to condense moisture out of the air as well as cool it, so a system that is already down on performance copes in cooler months and fails noticeably when it gets humid.
How often does a healthy system need regassing?
It should not need it routinely. The system is sealed and refrigerant is not consumed in use. If it is low, something is leaking, and that is what we look for first.
What causes the musty smell?
Bacteria and mould on the evaporator, which sits deep in the dash and stays damp from condensation. Spraying the vents masks it for a few days. Treating the evaporator and replacing the cabin filter deals with the source.
