Why the radiator is usually not the culprit

Common questions
Why does it only overheat in traffic?
Because at speed there is air moving through the radiator whether the fan works or not. Sitting still, the fan is doing all of it. Overheating that only happens stationary points strongly at fan operation or airflow rather than at coolant level.
Is it safe to keep driving if it creeps up a little?
No. An engine that overheats badly can warp a cylinder head or seize entirely, which turns a moderate repair into a very large one. If the gauge climbs above its normal position, pull over and let it cool.
How do you find a leak with nothing on the driveway?
We pressure test the system cold, which reveals leaks that only open up under pressure at temperature. If it holds pressure, we test for combustion gases in the coolant, which points at a head gasket rather than an external leak.
