A regas without a leak test is a temporary purchase
An air conditioning system is sealed. If it is low on refrigerant, that refrigerant went somewhere, because it is not consumed in normal use. Filling it back up without finding the leak means you are buying the same gas again next season, and running the system low also starves the compressor of the oil carried in the refrigerant. We test for leaks first and tell you what we find, even when the honest answer is that the repair is not worth it on an older car.
The smell is in the evaporator, not the vents
That damp, musty smell on start up is bacteria and mould growing on the evaporator, which sits deep in the dashboard and stays wet from condensation. Spraying deodoriser into the vents masks it for a few days. Treating the evaporator itself and replacing a clogged cabin filter deals with the actual source. A blocked cabin filter is also the most common reason for weak airflow, and it is a cheap part that gets overlooked for years.
Humidity makes the system work much harder here
Cooling the air is only part of what the system does. It also has to pull moisture out of it, and in Brisbane humidity that latent heat load is a large share of the total work. It is why a system that seems adequate in July struggles badly in February, and why a car that only feels cold once you are moving usually has a condenser airflow or fan problem rather than a refrigerant problem.

Common questions
How often does air conditioning need regassing?
A healthy sealed system should not need routine regassing. If it is low, something is leaking, and that is what we look for first.
Why is it cold when driving but warm at the lights?
That usually points at airflow across the condenser at the front of the car, often a failed or slow cooling fan, rather than a refrigerant level problem.
Can you fix the smell without pulling the dash apart?
In most cases yes. A treatment applied to the evaporator plus a new cabin filter resolves the majority of odour complaints.
Is the cabin filter the same as the engine air filter?
No, they are different parts. The cabin filter cleans the air you breathe inside the car and is the usual cause of weak vent airflow.
Do you work on older systems?
Yes. We will always tell you honestly if the cost of repairing an older system outweighs what it is worth doing on that car.
Should I run the air conditioning in winter?
It is worth running it for a few minutes every couple of weeks year round. The refrigerant carries the oil that lubricates the compressor seals, and a system left unused for months is more likely to dry out a seal and start leaking. A short regular run is free preventative maintenance.
