Brake lines are near the top of that list, because they are steel, they run the length of the underbody, and they are directly exposed to road spray. A corroded line can look sound from a distance and still be badly thinned, which matters because brake lines carry high pressure and fail suddenly rather than gradually. Exhaust joints and mounting hardware go the same way. Suspension fixings seize, which does not cause a fault by itself but turns a routine job into a much longer one when the bolts will not move.
What we look at on a coastal car
Brake lines along their full run, not just where they are easy to see. Exhaust hangers and joints, which corrode and then let go without warning. Suspension and subframe fixings, which seize long before they weaken. Electrical connectors near the underbody, where corrosion causes faults that look electrical but are really environmental. None of it is visible without the car on a hoist, which is why it goes unnoticed until something fails.

How often should brake lines be checked near the coast?
At every service is reasonable. Brake lines corrode from the outside in, so a line can look sound and still be badly thinned. They carry high pressure and tend to fail suddenly rather than gradually, which is why we do not leave them to chance.
Is underbody rust always serious?
Not always. Surface rust on a bracket is cosmetic. Corrosion on a brake line, a suspension mounting point or a structural member is not. We photograph what we find so you can see the difference rather than take our word for it.
Does washing the underbody actually help?
It does, more than most people expect. Rinsing the salt off after time near the water slows the process considerably. It will not reverse existing corrosion, but it buys the components that are still sound a lot more life.
