This is the single most misunderstood thing about modern car diagnostics. When a scan tool reports a code for an oxygen sensor circuit, it is not telling you the oxygen sensor has failed. It is telling you the signal from that circuit is outside the expected range. That can be caused by an exhaust leak upstream of the sensor, a fuel delivery problem, a wiring or connector fault, or the sensor itself. Four different causes, four very different costs, one code. Reading the code takes a minute and any parts shop will do it free. Working out which of the four you have is the part that requires live data, a wiring diagram and time.

A scan of a car that is currently behaving normally tells you very little. The useful approach is recording live data while the fault actually occurs, so you can go back and see the exact moment a sensor drops out or a voltage sags. We can log the relevant parameters and review the recording rather than asking you to describe from memory what the car did three days ago. It is slower than reading a code, and it is usually the only thing that finds the fault.

Common questions

The light went off by itself. Do I still need it checked?

Ideally yes. The fault is normally still stored in memory even after the light clears, so we can read what happened. A light that clears itself almost always comes back.

Can I just get the code read for free somewhere?

You can, and it is worth knowing what that gives you. A code names a circuit, not a broken part. The value is in working out which of several possible causes produced it, and that takes live data and time rather than a plug in reader.

My battery keeps going flat with no obvious reason.

That is usually a parasitic drain, something still drawing current after the car is locked and asleep. It is directly measurable and can be isolated circuit by circuit. It beats fitting a second new battery and watching that one go flat too.
